First Nation/Aboriginal people make up approximately one-third of the population of the Yukon and constitute a large part of the overall Yukon market.  YIDC is developing a strategy to either acquire ownership interests in active business entities that supply such products/services and/or establish businesses to supply goods/services required by the First Nations, their business entities, and their Citizens and .

We feel this approach allows us to:

  • Earn a positive return on our investment;
  • Be involved in companies that provide products/services required by our First Nation shareholders;
  • Through our ownership interests allow us to ensure long-term meaningful employment and training opportunities are provided to our First Nation Shareholders’ Citizens.

The development of strategic alliances and partnerships with other First Nation/Aboriginal businesses throughout Canada, which will allow us to combine resources and capacities required to participate fully in the larger national and multi-national economies.

An important factor we realize is that often times we do not have the management capacity to effectively establish and operate companies we would like to own.  As such we feel the approach of partnering with other companies that can provide required management or acquiring ownership interests in existing companies with strong management can be beneficial.  With such arrangements one goal always is to provide for training and development of First Nation persons to take on the management of these companies over time.

The importance of ensuring good corporate governance guidelines are established and implemented such that shareholders clearly understand their roles and responsibilities, directors clearly understand their roles and responsibilities, and management clearly understands its roles and responsibilities.
